Thank you always for using Nuita.

We have unified the icons used across Nuita, switching from Font Awesome to Bootstrap Icons. As with our last update, the visible changes are minimal — this is an improvement to make pages load a little lighter.

What Changed?

Until now, Nuita used an icon set called Font Awesome for some icons, such as the “#” mark on tags and the “×” on delete buttons. Meanwhile, more recently built screens used a different icon set called Bootstrap Icons, which meant two icon sets coexisted on the site.

This time, we replaced every place that used Font Awesome with Bootstrap Icons, unifying the site on a single icon set. This covers the “#” around tags, the “+” for adding tags, the “×” for deleting, the refresh button for recommendations, the content-warning mark, and more. The shapes have changed ever so slightly, but everything works exactly as before.

Why Unify?

One reason, to be honest, is that Font Awesome has started to feel a bit dated. Nuita’s UI is built on Bootstrap, so Bootstrap Icons — part of the same family — blend in better with the design and give the whole site a cleaner, more modern look.

The other big reason is to reduce requests to external servers.

Until now, Font Awesome was loaded from an external CDN (content delivery network). In other words, every time you opened a Nuita page, one request went out to a server other than Nuita’s. With this unification, that request is gone entirely.

  • Pages load a little faster: There is no longer any need to wait for an external server to respond.
  • No more exposure to third-party outages: You no longer have to worry about icons failing to display because of a CDN outage.
  • Easier maintenance: With a single icon set, the code is easier to follow, making future features and fixes easier to ship.

We also added tests to the internal mechanism that renders icons, so we can keep working on it with confidence.

It is a modest change, but we believe that an accumulation of small improvements like this one leads to a more comfortable ejaculation-reporting life.
